about your presenter
Koren Smith has a deep love for all things storytelling. Through marriage, motherhood and everyday struggles, she makes an effort to photograph the magic found in the minor details of the everyday. In her rare moments without a camera, you’ll likely find a stylist in her hand drawing these photographs within the world of her own creation.

She got me out of my comfort zone and looking at the light in my home in a new way. Koren was super encouraging. I really enjoyed her quirky personality which shines through and it was so great to see her edits and culls.
Koren has a wonderful and insightful way of teaching. She makes concepts that may feel ambiguous and intangible easy to understand and always gives great examples from her own work. Her manner is kind, funny and down to earth. There is so much good information in this breakout that is written in a way that’s easy to understand and put into practice. I love that she encourages everyone to just try, even if it results in failing because that’s how you learn and grow. It’s so fun to really see how her brain is working when she’s photographing and culling. She manages to combine improving both your technical and artistic senses for photographing around your home in a way that’s fun and relatable. I was really delighted by her ability to explain the feelings and mood that are captured by the photographs she makes and break down the technical aspects that relate to that.
With an amazing, almost behind-the-scenes feel, this breakout covers everything from our motivations as photographers, to what Koren shoots and why, to post-production. The culling of her shoots, where she sees her ideas that didn’t quite work, is reassuring to any family photographer, professional or amateur, and her walkthrough of editing gives some insight into her style and how it all works. I’ve come away from this breakout motivated to capture my family in any lighting, in any place, and to focus on mood over light.
I really appreciated Koren’s exercises that gave insight into why we love certain things in photos. She took ideas that were previous illusive to me and made them tangible with step by step instructions that made things so clear! My goal for this year is to learn light, and her light section has been so helpful to me, not only identifying and utilizing light, but also in FEELING light (mood).
I was struggling so much with the vision of my images and how to harness things like light and composition to tell the story that I wanted to tell. Koren has packed so much information and inspiration into this breakout that it’s kind of hard to wrap my head around and I’ll probably have to read through it again. Her way of explaining things is straightforward and very precise and makes a lot of sense. She does a great job of taking very abstract concepts and putting them into easily understandable terms. She was also very available and answered each of my questions to the best of her ability until she was sure that I was on the right track. Using her methods of observation and studying the world around me I can already tell will lead to an improvement overall in my images and I’m so glad I decided to invest in myself by purchasing this breakout! If you’re looking for something to help nudge you along the path to “seeing” things better, this breakout is a really great place to start!
Koren takes you on a journey that begins by helping you to understand your photographic voice through to a step-by-step guide on how to use light, composition, and observing your subjects to build story and mood in your photographs. The best part of the breakout is that I don’t have to go far from my home to do the shooting exercises or find the hints and tips she gives, which she explains all in detail. Just by going through the materials and her videos, I have started to look at things differently and see spots of light in my home that I wasn’t aware of before!
She breaks it down into an easy to follow step by step process. One of the best things about this breakout is it doesn’t matter what genre of photography you love… this applies to all genres!! I love having a lot of shooting exercises and this breakout has LOTS!! I really enjoyed the section on how to use light to set the MOOD of a photo.
If you like a Breakout with multiple exercises and prompts, this one is perfect. There’s inspiration top to bottom with shooting exercises to keep you busy for weeks (which is what we all need right now, right?!). I think we all want to find ways to dig deeper with what we have in front of us, and this is that perfectly. Her videos are thorough and fun as well. I’m so excited to work through this over the next few weeks to become more intentional with what is around me.
